About the role:
We are seeking an experienced Data Storytelling and User Experience Specialist II (Contract) to play a key role in the development and application of user experience (UX) and data storytelling best practices. The best practices in mention are applicable to data assets, reports, and presentations across the organization.  Specifically, the primary focus is the creation of templates in standard BI platforms, teaching classes to employees, and consultation on the development of self-service analytics products. The ideal applicant will bring practical experience applying UX best practices to dashboards and reports, creating Power BI templates, and communicating UX principles to colleagues.

This contractor will work closely with project leadership and the Data Literacy and Enablement team.

Success in this role will be measured by the quality and timeliness of materials produced, clarity of virtual and in-person teaching, and positive UX impact of consultation sessions.

About the job:
This role will join the highly innovative and collaborative Data Storytelling Center of Excellence (DSCOE) within the Data Literacy and Enablement team to improve the UX of our data assets and the UX data storytelling skills of multiple learning personas. 
 
What you will do:
  • Leveraging best practices, support the development of templates for data assets—including dashboards, reports, and presentations—with a focus on high-quality user experience and clear data storytelling, under the guidance of senior team members.
  • Assist in creating and delivering UX and data storytelling classes for employees across the enterprise, including data analysts, operations professionals, clinicians, and researchers.
  • Partner with DSCOE team members to support consultation efforts for data asset development, helping apply user experience and storytelling best practices to real-world projects.
  • Learn and consistently apply accessibility standards and inclusive design practices across all data products.
  • Collaborate with data professionals, designers, and stakeholders to understand and translate user needs into clear, usable, and visually effective data experiences.

Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree (Required), related field (Preferred)
  • UX certifications (Preferred)

Experience:
  • At least two years of UX experience with portfolio of previous work (Required)
  • At least three (3) years data analysis experience (Required)
  • At least five (5) years of data analysis experience (Preferred)
  • Previous experience working in a complex health care related environment (Preferred)
  • Technical experience developing in Power BI and other data visualization tools (Preferred)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Foundational knowledge of user experience and data storytelling principles, with demonstrated interest in applying these concepts to real-world data products. (Required)
  • Passion for clear, effective presentation of information and user-centered design. (Required)
  • Ability to support the translation of business questions into thoughtful data visualizations, with guidance from senior team members. (Required)
  • Experience collaborating with business stakeholders and cross-functional teams, including gathering basic requirements, participating in visualization reviews or demos, and contributing to the delivery of high-quality analytic products. (Required)
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and the ability to organize work effectively. (Required)
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with comfort explaining design choices and data concepts to diverse audiences. (Required)
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative mindset, with openness to feedback and continuous learning. (Required)
  • Intermediate knowledge of programming languages (SQL and R) (Required)
  • Intermediate knowledge of medical terminology (Preferred)
  • Advanced proficiency with spreadsheet software (Microsoft Excel) (Required)
  • Advanced proficiency with business intelligence tools (for example, QlikSense, Power BI, Posit Connect, SAP Business Objects, Tableau) (Required)
  • Intermediate proficiency with office software (Microsoft 365) including word processing and presentation software (Word, PowerPoint) (Required)
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills (Required)
