Position Overview:

The client seeks a contractor who will work with the department’s Web Manager and the information technology team to update department websites to meet elevated federal accessibility standards.
  • This position will be time-limited — estimated to be a three-month contract — based on completing current accessibility updates.
  • This would be a good opportunity for those interested in building further skills in web accessibility and interface design, as well as working with the information technology team.
  • Aptitude and demonstrated attention to detail is more important than years of experience in web development.
  • Under the direction of Web Manager, the Web Accessibility Assistant will be primarily responsible for updating Wordpress websites (using Cornerstone templates) using the state’s technology tools.
  • This person will make accessibility updates while retaining the pages’ design, and work with the Web Manager to problem-solve any accessibility issues.
  • A secondary phase of the project will focus on remediating published PDF documents to bring them in line with federal accessibility standards.

The client is the heart and soul of serving communities across the state.

Minimum requirements:
  • 1-2 years experience and/or proficiency implementing WCAG 2.1 AA web accessibility standards. Aptitude for enhancing website experience for users.
  • 1-2  years experience and/or proficiency in using WAVE — Web Accessibility Evaluation tools, including Pope Tech API.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in working in Wordpress, using the Cornerstone Builder, and understanding of basic principles of UX design.
  • Excellent, demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with colleagues and to translate technology into user-friendly terms; demonstrated problem-solving abilities.
  • Experience working as a team player with a positive attitude.

Preferred skills and qualifications:
  • Completed university-level courses in web accessibility or UX strategy; or knowledge of usability and accessibility standards.
  • Proficiency in working with web interface design, as well as interest in communicating with, and learning from, the state information technology team.
  • Experience in working in public sector or government agencies will help the Web Accessibility Assistant to understand the nature and goals of department websites.
