AWS Cloud Migration for a Regional Integrated Health System

A large regional integrated health system operating nine hospitals and more than 220 patient care locations partnered with Talent Groups to support a critical cloud transformation initiative. The organization provides a wide range of services, including diagnostic imaging, laboratory services, rehabilitation facilities, primary and urgent care, specialty centers, retail pharmacies, and medical equipment services.

Talent Groups had an established relationship with the organization’s Chief Technology Officer, who engaged our team to provide staff augmentation support for a large-scale AWS migration initiative under an aggressive timeline. As part of a broader modernization strategy, the organization launched a multi-phase effort to migrate thousands of systems and applications to AWS while maintaining operational continuity across the enterprise.

CHALLENGE

The client faced a highly complex AWS migration initiative with a condensed four-month timeline. The project required significant coordination across infrastructure, application, and operational teams while minimizing disruption to business operations.

Key challenges included:

  • Establishing a long-term AWS cloud operations model
  • Supporting scalability, governance, and sustainability
  • Coordinating the migration of thousands of VMs and applications
  • Managing dependencies across 14+ migration waves
  • Maintaining transparency across technical and business teams
  • Driving alignment during a large-scale infrastructure transformation

The environment included a combination of:

  • AWS (EC2 and native cloud services)
  • Nutanix (on-premises and NC2)
  • Hyper-V environments
  • SaaS platforms
  • Physical server infrastructure

The scale and pace of the engagement required disciplined execution, agile coordination, and strong communication management throughout the migration lifecycle.

APPROACH

Talent Groups partnered closely with the client to rapidly provide staff augmentation support for the AWS migration initiative. For Phase 1, Talent Groups deployed five consultants, including three AWS Project Managers, an IT Project Coordinator, and an IT Communications Specialist.

Our consultants supported planning, stakeholder communication, migration readiness, risk tracking, and wave execution management throughout the project lifecycle. The initiative included the migration of over 3,000 virtual machines and 290 applications across more than 14 coordinated migration waves.

Working alongside client leadership and technical teams, Talent Groups helped drive structure, transparency, operational discipline, and agile collaboration throughout the transformation initiative.

IMPACT

The migration initiative was completed with an estimated success rate between 97% and 100%, representing a highly successful large-scale cloud transformation executed within an accelerated timeline.

Key outcomes included:

  • Successful migration of thousands of infrastructure assets and applications
  • Strong execution discipline across all migration waves
  • Improved organizational transparency and communication throughout the project
  • Enhanced alignment between technical and operational stakeholders
  • Positive cultural shift toward agile collaboration and accountability
  • Establishment of a scalable foundation for long-term cloud operations

Client leadership described the engagement as a “five-star Agile approach,” highlighting the effectiveness of the planning, coordination, communication, and execution support provided throughout the initiative. The success of Phase 1 positioned the organization to continue into Phase 2, focused on long-term cloud optimization, operational sustainability, and continued modernization efforts.
