Building the World’s Largest Genomic Registry Targeting Kidney Disease

Our client, a division of the world’s leading provider of dialysis products and services, is a contract clinical development services company dedicated to medicines and medical products in renal research. They are the largest global network of investigators, CKD patients, ESRD patients, and data access.

PROJECT

Our client is embarking on an effort to build the world’s largest genomic registry targeting kidney disease. This work falls within their strategy to develop new forms of renal therapy using digital technologies and the capability to analyze huge amounts of data. They recognize that there is a lack of a large-scale, renal-focused registry of genomic and clinical data today, which is a major impediment to kidney disease research.

CHALLENGE

The client needed a Project Manager that could work across several different groups to understand the business need and the technology involved and drive the project successfully. They also needed data architecture expertise to understand the technology landscape, research options for the best approach, and create the structure for the data platform as well as how to form data in the cloud and consume it.

APPROACH

We provided a Data Architect and Sr Project Manager dedicated to this program to build a cloud-based data platform. They are architecting the AWS platform including clinical, patient, and genomics data coming from the data warehouse and other sources. They are compiling the data needed with patient consent so that researchers will have an enormous amount of data available to them.

IMPACT

The renal-focused genomic registry will be a sustainable and comprehensive tool for kidney-focused research. It will combine clinical and genetic sequencing data from diverse participants, which will be used by researchers to improve the understanding of kidney disease. This genomic and phenotypic research resource will help scientists better understand how genetic variations in patients can lead to more precise diagnoses and therapies that help improve outcomes by individualizing care. Our consultants have successfully helped to drive technology projects in support of this goal.
