Creating and Building an IT Project Management Office

Our client is a state government that was looking to establish and grow an IT Project Management Office for a $500M program. This PMO would be dedicated to a variety of high priority initiatives, including a unified health infrastructure project focused on providing health benefits including food stamps and Medicaid to state citizens in a timely fashion.

CHALLENGE

The client was searching for a strong candidate to lead the Project Management Office and build out a team. This was a key position and would work closely with the core leadership team in the prioritization and management of the solution. The program was in a difficult spot, having had a few hiccups and negative press associated with it. With this in mind, the client sought a partner they could trust to help them find the right person for this key role, and turned to Talent Groups.

APPROACH

Our recruiting team provided a focused local search for qualified candidates using a variety of sourcing tools, and connected with professional network contacts for referrals to ensure high caliber candidates were provided to the client.

Our team met with candidates on the phone and in person multiple times, as part of our rigorous process. We also utilized an IT Project Management Office questionnaire and thorough reference checking, to focus in on strong talent.

IMPACT

We helped the client identify and hire a Project Management Office Lead into a consulting role, who was the right match of experience, professionalism, and personality to fit their needs.

The Lead has been extremely successful in directing, organizing, and controlling the activities of the PMO, establishing processes to improve project delivery, and building relationships and establishing credibility for this program team. She is an instrumental part of a very challenging and high visibility initiative, has continued in this role 3 years, and is still at the client today.

Like to all our staff, we have provided ongoing consultant support from our end. We do this so our consultants know how valued they are, and to do whatever is in our power to keep them happy in their roles.

We also continued on to help the client hire several specialized IT project managers to grow the PMO and assist with specific projects, such as IT contracts management and problem management.

The client was very satisfied with this outcome and has come back to us several times to “clone” this person for them! As a result of this experience, they requested to work more extensively with Talent Groups and now turn to us on a continuous basis to help them recruit key roles as well as staff augmentation needs.
