Medical Affairs IT Leadership
CLIENT OVERVIEW
Our client, a rapidly growing pharmaceutical company, was growing from a single-product organization into a multi-therapeutic enterprise. As the business expanded, so did the complexity of its technology landscape, particularly within the Medical Affairs function, which supports critical scientific, compliance, and field operations.
CHALLENGE
Our client experienced some turnover in their Medical Affairs IT team and had a gap of leadership. They needed an experienced IT consultant to augment the team supporting the Medical Affairs business function. They needed a strategic leader who could own the business relationship, understand the scope, purpose, and goals of the program, and also drop down into the details and help deliver on projects. This group had several key projects including an evaluation and migration to their core CRM system.
APPROACH
Talent Groups partnered with the organization to understand their team and company culture and analyze the type of people that would best fit into their environment to be successful. Leveraging our Life Sciences talent network, we identified a few strong candidates with proven experience in Medical Affairs systems and leadership roles that would best fit this role.
Each candidate underwent a rigorous vetting process, including multiple interviews and reference checks. Talent Groups managed the end-to-end hiring process—coordinating interviews, facilitating communication, and ensuring a smooth onboarding experience for both the client and the consultant.
IMPACT
Talent Groups delivered an experienced pharmaceutical IT leader who provided hands-on leadership across the Medical Affairs portfolio. The consultant brought deep expertise in Medical Affairs operations, including Medical Science Liaison (MSL) field activities and the systems that support them, and oversaw multiple delivery teams and enterprise applications. These systems included content management, grants management, and medical inquiry tracking platforms.
The consultant built strong relationships across the business and led several critical initiatives, including the migration from a legacy platform to a new grants management solution (CyberGrants). This work involved collaborating with business stakeholders on workflow design, coordinating with vendors, and partnering with internal IT teams on system configuration—all while ensuring compliance with applicable federal regulations. The implementation required careful management of complex system integrations and updates to support the organization’s expanding therapeutic areas.
In addition, the consultant managed a major upgrade to a medical inquiry tracking system partially built on Salesforce. They designed and implemented standardized communication and testing cycles with a managed service provider, aligning Salesforce releases with the provider’s software deployment schedule to ensure stability and consistency.
The engagement was extended multiple times due to the consultant’s impact and strong business partnerships. Upon project completion, the consultant successfully transitioned to support another team within the organization—ensuring continuity and long-term value.
